As our cool cat Miles approaches his first monthiversary on December 22, and with the SoCalAllens enjoying a relatively quiet Sunday at home, we have decided to share some photos of the past couple of weeks and explain what we do to occupy our days.
I. WE LEARN
After returning from the hospital, the SoCalAllens quickly found a routine with Miles after discovering what only two MBAs would refer to as the 4 S's: Sleeping, Stirring, Stretching, and Screaming.
There is a range in how long it takes Miles to move from one stage to the next, but there is always a logical sequence and with each phase we know we're getting incrementally closer to a feeding and diaper change.
The 4S's are pictured clockwise starting at the top left.
II. WE COMPOSE MUSIC
On our first night home, we composed a song during a late-night feeding that we assume will one day be the anthem of all breastfed babies.
Take Me Out to the Boobie (sung to the tune of Jack Norworth 1908 Classic Take Me Out to the Ball Game)
Take me out to the boobie,
Take me out to the boob;
Buy me some milk, and milk, and milk,
I don’t care if I poop in my pants.
Let me milk, milk, milk from my mommy,
If I fall asleep, it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three in the morn,
At my mom’s boobie.
III. WE WALK
The nice thing about discovering the 4 S's is that it allows us to get out of the house for some nice long walks around Santa Monica with the comfort of knowing when we should start to head home.
For the young ladies out there, Miles is a Sagittarius who enjoys long walks on the beach.
He particularly enjoys the nice ocean breeze off the Pacific.
Miles also prefers snuggling with his papa over learning about the wonderful world of the Washingtonia Robusta Palm over his shoulder.
Jill and Miles outside of Saint Monica's Church, which is fitting because he has been quite a little angel thus far.
Peter and his brother Ben of the NorCalAllens (see link to the right) with Miles on our festive 3rd Street Promenade. In case there is any confusion, Miles is the one wrapped in a blanket.
Peter and Miles posing in front of a large gingerbread house. We wanted to move in, but the real estate market is still too high in Santa Monica.
IV. WE EAT
We are blessed to have a team of family and friends focused on making sure that we remember to eat. As a result, we have never eaten better and our refrigerator is constantly stocked.
Here is Jill's mother Daisy, "Abueloca," shopping for us at the Farmers' Market.
This time of year we tend to stock up on persimmons and heirloom tomatoes.
Our friend Noam stopped by with sandwiches from Bay Cities.
Peter's brother Ben prepared his famous farmers' market vegetarian tacos while he was here for a visit. Yummy!
Our friend Amy also visited from Berkeley to meet Miles. In addition to helping Jill care for Miles while Peter was in San Francisco for two days (it takes a special friend to clean your son's butt), she took Jill and Miles on their first lunch outing to Fred Segal Cafe and later roasted a whole chicken.
Our friends Bill and Laura also stopped by with some homemade lasagna and delicious spice cake.
Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of the dinner or the chefs because we were too busy eating, but we do have a picture of Miles sporting the new Uggs they brought with dinner. They are intentionally large because they assume Miles will follow in his father's size 16 footsteps.
V. WE VISIT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
When we are not walking around the neighborhood or eating, we tend to spend time visiting with friends. Here is a picture of Jill with fellow HBSers Renata and Rebecca and future HBSer Renata's eight month-old daughter Sophia.
Uncle Ben kept an eye on Sophia while she kept an eye on Miles.
Our UCLA friends Maryann and Ohad came by to visit Miles.
Peter's stepmother Susan, "Granny Allen," who as always spoiled us with delicious home-cooked meals.
Peter's Dad, "Grandpa Lee," sporting a nice Juicy Couture burp cloth.
VI. WE SEE DOCTORS
At this point, the only reason we get in the car with Miles is to see a doctor. Oddly enough, Miles loves his car seat so he seems disappointed that we don't drive around more.
At Miles' first visit to the pediatrician, we neglected to bring a blanket even though Daisy reminded us how cold it is at a doctor's office. As luck would have it, Miles enjoys the comfort and long arms of Peter's cashmere sweater.
The SoCalAllens have appointed Daisy our Ambassador of Baby Kisses and she takes her role very seriously at Miles' first doctor's visit.

VII. WE WORK OUT
Miles at the Gymini working his neck muscles on his way to his first triathlon. Now he just needs to learn to crawl, stand, walk, run, swim, and bike.
Have you ever wondered if there was more to life, other than being really, really, ridiculously good looking?
VIII. WE CHANGE DIAPERS
Do not let this photo deceive you; there is no one awake to take photos when Jill is changing Miles in the middle of the night.
IX. WE SLEEP
After we finish learning, composing music, walking, eating, visiting with friends and family, and seeing doctors, we tend to sleep. Miles is the master of sleep, but he is training his parents well.
